WONDROUS LIGHT - December newsletter.jpg

Wondrous Light by Deborah Beaudet

Hospice of Santa Barbara December 10, 2018

Tonight, the moon is full and the skies heavens are alive.....with a wondrous light.

The cold crisp air is sweet.....with the scent of salt spray.

I am reminded to feel the pulse of life within my body.

Across the whitened sand, my shadow follows the shadow that follows me.

I walk, all good sense abandoned, towards the wild and relentless sea of uncertainty.

Does eternity wait for me at the water’s edge?

My thoughts are fogged....yet my conscience is clear in the knowing.......

That I have lived well and walked in the light of your glowing love.

Tonight I celebrate Life as I contemplate death, embracing the unknown.

This night....the sky is aglow with the promise of that new and wondrous day,

When I join hands with my beloved, and my treasured ones.

I bask in the destiny that satiates all my longings.

Under this bright moon, all that is Peace embraces me.

Yes.....I have lived well, and walked in the light of your glowing love.

HSB has facilitated the “Healing Through Poetry” group for more than 10 years. Peri Longo, past Santa Barbara poet laureate, supports individuals in grief to express themselves through poetry. To inquire about an upcoming session, please contact the intake coordinator at (805) 563-8820 ext. 110 or visit the Support Group page. No poetry or writing experience necessary.

Allah, Allah by Pamela Emerson

Hospice of Santa Barbara October 22, 2018

Waiting for my son to emerge from surgery,
Unsettled by the discord of hospital noise,
I entered the nearby meditation room
And sat in the welcome silence
To calm my head and my heart.

A moment after I closed my eyes
Another person entered the quiet space.
Rolling out a small rug,
He began aloud the entreaties to his God.

His small voice cloaked me with unexpected comfort.
Hearing the ancient supplication - - Allah, Allah
I felt a sense of gratitude to be witness
to his age-old prayer.

Days later, my son has unresolved complications.
For my own comfort in this new uncertainty,
I wonder - - do I trespass when I hear in my head,
Allah, Allah?

In my deep interior I am drawn to
The alluring softness of this venerable sound - -
Allah, Allah.
